There is no honest national price for drilling a well. What a project costs depends on the property, the project, and the provider's scope of work — which is why this page explains the factors instead of publishing a number.
Why we don't publish price ranges
Price ranges found online are frequently averages assembled from unrelated projects in unrelated places. They are easy to publish and easy to misread, and they can set an expectation that has nothing to do with your property. We would rather explain what actually moves a provider's number.
We also do not offer a cost calculator. A calculator would have to guess at site conditions and local requirements, and a guess dressed up as an estimate is not useful information.
General factors that may affect a provider's quote
Project type
A first well, a replacement well, work on an existing well, and closing an unused well are different scopes of work with different requirements.
Property and site circumstances
The parcel itself, where the work would take place, and the conditions a crew encounters on site all influence a provider's approach.
Location
Requirements, availability, and how far a provider travels vary by region and even by county.
Access
How equipment reaches the work area — driveways, gates, slopes, trees, standing crops, or an occupied yard — affects the work involved.
Scope of work
Some quotes cover only the well. Others include additional components or services. Two quotes can differ mostly because they cover different things.
Materials and equipment involved
The materials a provider specifies and the equipment a project calls for are part of what they price.
Applicable local requirements
Permits, documentation, and local rules are determined by the relevant authority, and complying with them is part of a provider's scope.
Additional services included
Related work a provider may bundle — or intentionally exclude — changes what a quote represents.
Comparing quotes fairly
If you receive more than one quote, the useful question is usually not which number is lower but what each number covers. Ask what is included, what is excluded, what could change once work begins, and how the provider handles that. Those answers make two quotes comparable.
